04 Aug Why Your Brain Isn’t Wired For Admin Tasks
Have you ever noticed that there are some things, either in business or in life, that you just can’t do? You really struggle to ‘get’ it, or you do get it, but you just can’t find the time because it’s something you have to work a bit harder at, or you don’t enjoy? It’s no surprise really – after all, we’re all wired differently, and what one person is great at, another might be awful. It’s part of the wonderful tapestry of life.
But as a business, you need to be able to perform a wide variety of tasks to an equal level – even the ones you don’t enjoy, or struggle to achieve. And since we’re all wired differently, you might need some help and support in getting everything done.
Why is Brain Wiring Important?
There’s a reason I chose the title I did, and it’s because struggling with admin is more than just an annoyance. The way your brain is wired significantly affects the way you perform tasks, and each person’s brain is wired slightly differently. The foundation for this wiring has often been started in childhood, and grown from there. According to scientific research, the way a person’s brain is ‘wired’ directly impacts how well they perform simple and complex tasks, like admin. For the most part, your ability to perform admin tasks quickly and well depends on whether you have a high-modular or low-modular brain. Low-modular brains are better at performing more complex tasks that take time to perform, while high-modular brains are better at performing simple tasks that can be done quicker. It really is fascinating research, which you can read more about in the link above. But to summarise for you – the type of brain you have really does impact how well you can (or can’t) do admin tasks.
The other issue a lot of people face is procrastination. You know, when you see the admin tasks on your to-do list, but you keep putting it off and putting it off, hoping it will somehow magically disappear? That’s your brains fault too. Our brains are divided into ‘doers’ and ‘non-doers’. The doers will have the get up and go to try doing their admin (even if they have the wrong kind of brain for admin tasks), and the non-doers will put it all off until the last possible moment. The doer is usually very on top of admin, while the non-doer is the opposite. If you find you procrastinate a lot in life, you will likely do the same on your admin tasks. And while you can drive yourself to do them at crunch time, the likelihood is that you will never be proactive about your admin. Within those categories you do have different types of people (the admin avoider, the denier and so on), but generally, you will either put it off with some excuse or another, or you will get it done. And all of this depends on the way your brain is wired to deal with tasks it doesn’t want to do. Will it procrastinate, or will it get shit done?
