When it comes to running a business, it pays to be organised. Being organised means you can be more efficient, get more done, and you can grow more effectively too. But when you’re the boss, you have dozens if not hundreds of things on your plate at once, and it can be a real challenge to stay on top of everything. That’s why you’ll often see business owners with a desk covered in paperwork and to-do lists a mile long. But with just a few little tweaks, you could see a dramatic improvement in your business performance. Organise Your Workspace
Seriously. While it might seem like a small thing, your working environment has been proven to have a direct impact on your productivity, your mental health and your creativity. This is because it saves you time, eliminates stress (even subconscious stress), and helps you locate things more easily. In turn, that extra time and mental headspace allows you to be more creative, to meet your deadlines on time, and ultimately help you make more money. Honestly, an organised workspace leads to an organised business!
But if you’ve never organised your workspace before, it can seem daunting, so here are a few things you can do to get started:
- Throw away any rubbish.
- Pick up anything that has ended up where it doesn’t belong, and put it back.
- Go through your paperwork – shred what isn’t relevant or needed anymore.
- Set yourself up with a document scanning app and get any remaining documents digitised, and then shred the paper copies.
- Pick up a few storage solutions to make sure your workspace stays free of clutter, but you can access things when you need them.
- Segment your working zones, so you can organise each one differently depending on how you work (for example, have a computer-based and a non-computer-based space).
- Declutter your computer desktop and put things into organised folders.
Exactly how you organise your workspace should be unique to how you work best, but the general idea is to end up with a clear space that’s free of clutter, and where everything has a home.
Use The Right Productivity Tools
Getting yourself set up with the right tools can have a huge impact on how much you get done in a day. Where you can, we recommend automating tasks that can be automated. For example, if you’re struggling to keep up with posting on social media, set yourself up a Hootsuite account, and dedicate 1 hour a week, to scheduling in your content.
