20 Aug A dream of self employment
The reality is this is challenging. In my previous blog I stated that your business is a child and requires more attention than a human being. This is true. Since becoming self employed all though I have been able to decide when to do things, I have been working late into the night, weekends and not being able to switch my brain of to relax as you juggle so many hats when self employed.
When working for your self you have to be the Company Face, Marketing, HR, Sales team, the person that completes the work and also ensure that you remember which hat you have on and where you are meant to be.
When you work as an employee you achieve one role, and you can decide if you are going to take work home with you or leave it at your employment place. When you are feeling dreadful you can decide to attend work or stay at home to re-couperate. Going on holiday is a must, and you can be paid for 25 days or more to sit on a sun lounger rest, relax and have no worries for the time you are away.
As self employed a lot of people are driven to keep there business going, want to thrive and achieve for the family and switching of seems like the biggest challenge to complete. I find myself cooking dinner and thinking about the next week and where the money is going to come from, how am I going to build up my client basis and how can I ensure that I continue to love what I am doing but get the balance of business thriving and me having time out to be with family and relax. I wake up in the night, thinking about my clients how could I help them, what I could do to help my business and who I was meant to email but got carried away doing something else within the business.
So how can you help yourself get the work life balance you thought you where walking into.
- First of all list writing is key, ensure you write everything down you need to complete for your clients and yourself. Work out what is a priority – ie if you get paid for the work then maybe place this at the top of the list to ensure you can reduce the worry about finances.
- Plan times in your diary where you want to be with friends and family and do not worry about taking an hour of in the day, your business will not fail in that time. Take time out atleast once a week
- Work out if you can outsource any of the work to ensure you get a better balance
- Be proud of what you have achieved and what you are achieving, life if not easy but you will succeed if you are the driving force behind it.
